Content for Vidblogs

Video blogging is a popular way for bloggers to get their thoughts and ideas across to blog visitors. We all enjoy watching a movie. Search engines however don’t feel the same way about vidblogs as people – how do they find the information contained in the video.

One way to overcome this limitation is to include a transcription of the video in the vidblog post. This is precisely what I recently did for a client. The video below was transcribed ‘intelligent verbatim‘ in other words it was cleaned up; pauses for thoughts, filler expressions such as uh, um, kind of etc. edited out. The idea of intelligent verbatim transcription being to produce a readable result from the spoken word.

A Vidblog Transcription Example

The video below is used as an example of the effectiveness of video transcription for bloggers. The original post contained only a single line of text content “

I outline some of the reasons why this is a tremendous time to not wait invest in Real Estate. Rates are great, prices are great but nothing lasts forever.”

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Only twenty-nine words. Not nearly enough for Google to consider the post valuable to viewers. Three hundred or more words is a good rule of thumb when blogging or writing content for a website to keep Google happy. Too many very short posts will in fact harm the blog or site overall.

After transcribing the video, the word count has increased to over six hundred; better for search engine indexing.

Updating Improves SERP

Here’s another benefit; The next time Google comes along to look at the site, the search engine spider will compare this post to the archived version, see it has been updated with a lot of new content added. What was previously an old post with very little content to draw the search engine’s attention, has now become a fresh article with substantial value both for visitors and ‘Googlebot’.

Consider having your older (and new) video blog posts transcribed – your blog or website will benefit.

  1. Lynda, Thanks for the blog follow. I look forward to reading yours. I’m sailing in the Bahamas and can’t always get an internet connection. Today is a good day for that, so I’m catching up on what I’ve been missing.
